Jerry Carr, director of platform marketing at Canonical,
announced that the Ubuntu Netbook Edition (a version of the Ubuntu distribution optimized for netbooks) will merge with the mainline starting from the next release - 11.04 Natty Narwhal.
Carr explained the change in that in future versions of Ubuntu, Unity will be used to replace GNOME Shell.
The user interface of the new shell works equally well regardless of the form factor of the device. And the underlying shell technology supports various architectures, including the main architectures of netbooks, laptops, desktops, and other devices. Consequently, the need for a separate version for netbooks has disappeared.

At the same time, the name of the distribution is changed. Ubuntu Desktop Edition will now be referred to simply as Ubuntu, and Ubuntu Server Edition will be called Ubuntu Server.
