ABBYY Lingvo Intranet Server

Despite the fact that ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries have been for more than 20 years and in recent years most of the sales have been in the corporate market, a special product for organizations in the Lingvo lineup appeared only last April. And on Habré we talk about him for the first time just now. So, we present ABBYY Lingvo Intranet Server (LIS).


Until recently, we sold corporate customers versions of ABBYY Lingvo, which are installed on each workplace. They existed in several variants. The first is SLE (Site License Edition). This Lingvo configuration is set up by “uploading” from the server to the users' computers on the corporate network; activation is not required. Site License Edition is designed for companies that need 1000 or more jobs equipped with the program. Other existing configurations are Per Seat (individual license for each workplace) and Concurrent (with this installation option, the server has a limited number of free licenses that users pick up if they need to work with the program). In any configuration, each such installation is intended for personal use and requires appropriate administrative support at each workplace. ABBYY Lingvo Intranet Server is a portal solution. Its feature is that the program is installed not on individual workplaces, but on an internal server, and any user of the internal network can use dictionaries remotely.

As you all understand, the main convenience of such a solution is that when hiring a new employee you do not need to do additional installation of software - you just need to organize access to the portal. When an employee leaves, there is no task to deactivate the software in order to save the license for future use by the new user.

And for those companies that use their own corporate glossaries, ABBYY Lingvo Intranet Server is generally an irreplaceable thing. What is a corporate glossary? In any company that is faced with translated documents, sooner or later a problem arises: the same terms are translated differently. To solve this problem, you need to put together the common terminology adopted in the company. For this purpose, corporate glossaries are created - unique dictionaries for each organization. When the dictionary is created, there is a need for a technology solution that would allow all employees to use it and, very importantly, receive regular updates. The desktop product does not help here - updates need to be installed on each workplace, it is much more convenient to use a portal solution. By the way, another product is associated with LIS - Lingvo Content. It serves just to create dictionaries and glossaries and to support them. From Lingvo Content, glossaries can be exported and then connected to an Lingvo Intranet Server to use as regular dictionaries.

A new portal solution has already been implemented in some large companies - we will definitely tell you about it in detail.
