Electronic Parliamentary Elections in Estonia (2011)

image

Now in Estonia there are elections to the parliament and in these elections, as well as in the last elections, there is an opportunity to vote electronically using an ID-card and a reader, which is sold at every corner for the price of a little more than 5-6 dollars.

To vote, first of all you need to install drivers for the ID card, which are available here . However, under Ubuntu 10.10, I unfortunately did not manage to get them, but without any problems, when connecting the repository, alternative drivers got up.
')
After installing the program, a special software for managing the ID card becomes available on the computer, which should be noted, has been done quite efficiently in Russian, Estonian and English.

Next, we need a special software for voting, which is available here .
A version is available for all operating systems, including Linux, which for me is a pleasant surprise.

After downloading and launching the software, we have a screen asking us to choose an authentication method, among the available methods: ID-card through the reader, or Mobile-ID .

It is worth noting that since the previous elections, software has undergone many changes in the interface.

If the card is not found in the reader, we are carefully informed about this and sent to where we can help.

If everything is fine, go to the next step, where we need to enter the 4-digit PIN 1 code that came with the card.
image
PIN 1 code is asked to complete all identity verification operations.

If PIN 1 code was entered correctly, they remind me who I am and where I got to.

We press on the button and translates us to the list of candidates.

I want to draw attention to the fact that the system itself determines your place of residence and provides you with a list of only candidates in your place of residence. You are not interested in candidates from other cities.

After selecting a candidate, I transfer to the next stage, where I have to check

and confirm my choice by entering another, second PIN code consisting of 5 digits.

Using PIN (2), you put your digital signature, which is equivalent to a paper one.

We must pay tribute, the work on the interface was done quite large and the interface was made as simple as possible, beautifully and intuitively without unnecessary elements (Although I am sure that multilingualism would be a good addition to this program).

A bit dry numbers. The voting has just ended, and during the voting (from 9 am on February 24, until 20.00 on March 2), more than 130 thousand people voted electronically ( proof ), which is quite impressive for a small country like Estonia.

As far as my strength and knowledge is concerned, I will try to answer any questions you may have.
