The world's first floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP) under construction in Russia has been included in the list of 30 most important innovations of 2010, compiled by the authoritative weekly French magazine L'Usine Nouvelle.
The floating nuclear power plant is adjacent to this list with Apple’s revolutionary iPad computer, the American X-51A Waverider supersonic cruise missile being built in Norway by a unique floating wind power plant, a synthetic bacterial cell fully synthesized by a computer program using chemical test tubes, as well as the latest lithium batteries, which allowed the car to drive 600 kilometers without recharging, reports RIA Novosti.
Rosatom is building the first floating nuclear power plant at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. In June 2010, a floating power unit consisting of a smooth-deck, self-propelled vessel with two icebreaking-type KLT-40C reactors was launched. The installed electrical capacity of each reactor is 35 MW, the thermal capacity is 140 gigacalories. The potential life of the station is 38 years.
In remote areas where it is unprofitable to draw power lines or import fuel, the construction and operation of a floating nuclear power plant is much more profitable than the construction and operation of ground-based power plants.
