Communication of the future

In late January, the three-dimensional figure of Princess Leia appeared at a conference in San Francisco. Red and fuzzy, she was nowhere near as realistic as in the 1977 Star Wars movie. However, the figure created by engineers in San Francisco was a real hologram, not a video effect. It was created with the help of low-cost, mass-produced equipment, and this showed that holography would soon become an ordinary means of communication.

The hologram is different from the three-dimensional image, which is used in 3D films. It uses a projection of the image on a flat screen that looks volumetric with the help of an optical illusion. A hologram creates a truly three-dimensional figure in space. The main difference is that if you go around the hologram, you will see its reverse side, and not the reverse side of the screen. Princess Leia was created by members of the Object-Based Media Group from the MIT Media Lab. An important feature of their work was that instead of expensive laser equipment, they used a “controller without controller” Kinect, designed for the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console. The poor quality of the controller's camera caused the hologram to be blurred.
