At the World Mobile Congress (MWC 2011), Skype announced the launch of one and the expansion of another affiliate program.
I’ll start with the second one: the number of WiFi operators that support the Skype Access service is significantly increased. Now to Boingo (the alliance, which includes our native Beeline WiFi in particular), BT Openzone, Tomizone, Fon and a number of other operators will be added, giving a total of 500,000 hotspots around the world (there were 100,000), and also means that prices for WiFi via Skype Access will start from 5 eurocents per minute (now it is 14 eurocents, and it is not yet known whether the tariff will be different in different networks or whether prices will be expected for all program participants). (About why you need Skype Access and why you should not be horrified by prices per hour -
here , so as not to be distracted here).
Plus, in honor of the MWC throughout Spain, WiFi when connected via Skype Access will be free from February 14 to 18.
But the new program is called Mobile Partner Program and is addressed to mobile operators. In fact, it is based on the successful collaboration between Skype and Verizon Wireless, Hutchison 3 and KDDI. As part of the program, Skype offers operators a special version of the application and a server solution that allows network subscribers to use Skype for calls and chat even on a not very fast connection.
')
The example of Hutchison 3 shows that, contrary to popular misconception, the active use of Skype does not “cannibalize” voice traffic - people just talk more, adding to Skype conversations, including international calls, which they didn’t even think about making tariffs operator. Skype users on network 3 (the Hutchison trademark) in the UK even bring the operator a higher average income than others, and among them there are fewer cases of switching to other operators.
So let's see what happens and who else from the operators decides that it may be more profitable for them to “be friends” with popular Internet services than to ban them or try to create alternatives for their
surrogates .
