Radiohead , in 2007 with the release of the album
“In Rainbows”, was one of the first to use the “pay what you want” scheme and made a lot of noise, today
announced the new album “The King of Limbs”, which will be distributed differently: you can also buy it in digital form directly on the website of the group without the participation of labels, but for a fixed amount. An album in MP3 with a bit rate of 320kbps will cost 6 pounds (approximately 282 rubles), and audiophiles can buy a WAV version for 9 pounds. Fans can pay 30 pounds and get, in addition to the digital version, an expensive physical edition of the album (vinyl records + CD + large booklet). The digital version will be released this Saturday, February 19 (and this despite the fact that, until today, the group has hardly reported anything about a possible new album), and the physical one will be sent out in May.
For the three and a half years that have passed from the release of “In Rainbows”, other groups tried to sell music without labels, but few decided to set an arbitrary price, and no one else had such a resounding success. However, according to a similar scheme, there is the Russian website kroogi.ru, which publishes new records Aquarium, Tequilajazzz, Lyapis Trubetskoy and other popular Russian-speaking groups.
