Telephone boxes in China will be equipped with Wi-Fi

As Chinese blogger Sherman So writes , citing an article in a local publication, Chinese mobile operators are going to turn phone booths into hot spots.



First, since mobile phones are becoming more common, booths are being used less and less. The article says that in some areas less than one person uses a phone booth per day. Given that the booths require constant maintenance, this is really a waste of resources.

Secondly, Chinese 3G services (regardless of whether they are provided by China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom) are still slow and unstable. Everywhere, established access points would complement them perfectly. Telephone booths that are on every corner are ideal places for these access points.



The article also states that in addition to telephone booths, operators will install access points in restaurants, hotels and other establishments. If the idea is really implemented, they will turn every Chinese city into a giant Wi-Fi network for a fast Internet connection.
