Google will introduce two-step verification for all users

As announced to customers of Google Apps in September, Google has developed two-step verification to increase security. Now it's time to offer this feature to all Google users.

Two-step verification requires two independent factors for authentication: a password and a code received using a telephone. Over the next few days you will be able to see a new link on the account setup page :

A setup wizard will guide you through the entire process, including specifying a backup phone number and creating backup codes in case you lose access to your primary phone.

As soon as you turn on two-step verification, after you enter the password, you will be shown an additional page offering to enter the code. The code will be sent to you in an SMS message, or you can generate the code using a mobile application on Android, BlackBerry or iPhone.

According to the Google Security team, the new feature will significantly increase the security of Google accounts, because it requires a combination of what the user knows - the password and what he has - the phone. The potential hacker will need access to both of these factors in order to gain access to the account.

If you wish, you can select the option “Remember verification for this computer within 30 days” in order not to enter the code again for 30 days. You can also configure one-time passwords for specific applications that need your authorization data, but who do not know how to request a code.
