The browser interface has undergone a noticeable polishing. First of all, tabs can now be placed on a separate line . On this account there were a lot of feedback from advanced users and the company could not ignore them. You can change the display mode of tabs from the context menu. ')
Based on user feedback, other important changes were also made:
in the address search box One Box - now it's easier to enter and modify your search queries;
in the attached sites - now not only you can pin sites at any position of the taskbar, but also new opportunities for developers: install an element on a page that you can drag and drop to pin (previously you could only have a site icon or tab), plus the start page of the pinned site can specify multiple items;
the copied address can be easily inserted into the address bar and go to it using the Ctrl + Shift + L combination;
reduced frame size + visual improvements in tabs, helping to better identify the active tab and just close inactive ones;
download manager now also displays download speed.
Standards Support Updates
In IE9 RC, in comparison with beta, the changes that were added in the intermediate Platform Preview versions were fixed: support for CSS3 2D Transforms and HTML5 semantic tags were added.
Also, a number of updates were made to previously added functions and elements:
For the Canvas element, support for the globalCompositeOperation property has been added and the performance of CanvasPixelArray has been improved (by the way, I’ll note separately that now in the HTML working group there is an active discussion on adding functionality to the Canvas that is necessary to ensure Accessibility);
Updated support for DOM Events to display changes in specifications;
Added accessibility support for controls in HTML5 audio and video;
Added support for playing video in the WebM codec , if it is installed on the user's computer.
In addition, support for the Geolocation API and the necessary browser functionality to ensure user privacy are also added.
The test suite for various standards has been updated on the IE Testing Center: 1093 new tests have been added, 57 tests have been updated with feedback. Total set includes 3942 different test developed during the preparation of IE9.
For those who basically do not read the descriptions of the tests, these tests do not show the degree of coverage of a particular standard by any browser.
Speed updates
By the release of IE9 RC, significant work was done to optimize the speed of the browser, including both improvements in individual subsystems and optimization of the response speed of the interface (for example, by searching on the page).
Work continued to accelerate the JavaScript engine “Chakra” and its interaction with other browser subsystems, which is noticeable in the Webkit Sunspider test, which differs from conventional synthetic JavaScript tests in that it also checks the speed of the DOM, which more realistically reflects browser performance on real sites :
Key conclusion: the performance of all major browsers has significantly increased over the year and is at the same level in most traditional scenarios.
Also, IE9 RC in some scenarios uses less memory than beta, which is connected in particular with the optimization of image processing.
Security Updates
In IE9 RC, as promised, the Tracking Protection feature has been added. The function is based on special anti-shadowing lists that may be provided by various organizations. These lists allow you to allow and prohibit the use of third-party content on sites, and thereby control what information is transmitted to third-party sites and services.
