I sometimes hear people say, “Remember when Google just got started and the results were so good? Then there was no spam on Google. Ah, it would be good to return those days. ” I understand why they say that. In 1999, I studied in a magistracy and I remember how impressed I was by Google’s issuance after just a few search queries.
But it’s wrong to think that in those days there was no spam on Google. In 2000, Google looked great compared to other search engines of the time, but Google sample 2011 is much better than Google 2000. I know this because in October 2000 I sent more than 40,000 searches to google.com and saved the results as a kind of time capsule.
For example, the search query [
buy domain name ]. Google’s current issue is not perfect, but the page has several resources and several places where you can actually buy a domain name. This is what Google returned to this query in 2000:
URL_1: http: //buy-domain-name.domain-searcher.com/domains/buy-domain-name.shtml
URL_2: http: //buy-domain-name.domain-searcher.com/buy-domain-name.shtml
URL_3: http: //buy-domain.domain-searcher.com/domains/buy-domain.shtml
URL_4: http: //buy-domain.domain-searcher.com/Map3.shtml
URL_5: http: //domain-name-broker.domain-searcher.com/domains/domain-name-broker.shtml
URL_6: http: //users5.50megs.com/buydomain32/
URL_7: http: //users4.50megs.com/buydomain02/
URL_8: http: //domain-name-service.domain-searcher.com/domains/domain-name-service.shtml
URL_9: http: //domain-name-service.domain-searcher.com/Map2.shtml
URL_10: http: //dns-id.co.uk/
Seven of the first ten results come from one domain, and these addresses look a bit ... well, let's say, doubtful. In 1999 and early 2000, search engines could often return 50 results from a single domain for a query. In February 2000, Google introduced a good innovation: a host combining algorithm that showed only two results from each host. At one point, the search results have become much cleaner and more varied! It was a real victory - we even received emails from fans. Unfortunately, after a few months, people began to create numerous subdomains to bypass the host association algorithm, as the output at the top shows. Later, Google added a more robust code to prevent this type of subdomain fraud and provide better variety. That is why there are so many conversations around the decision now, use
subdomains or subdirectories .

Improving search quality is an endless process. I hope that in ten years we will look back and say: “Wow, at that time most of the requests were in a few words. And it was necessary to type requests manually. How primitive! Mostly, I want to emphasize that in 2000, Google looked much cleaner compared to other search engines, but spam was a problem even then, without a doubt. If someone remembers the golden, undisturbed days when there was no spam on Google, be suspicious of these memories. :)
