The iTunes Store has become the third largest music retailer in the United States, ahead of Amazon.com and Target in terms of sales.
iTunes in the first quarter had 9.8% of the market and stood behind the
Wal-Mart Stores chain of stores with its 15.8%, as well as
Best Buy with 13.8%.
Amazon.com's online store had a market share of 6.7%, and
Target had a market share of 6.6%. These statistics were obtained by the market research firm
NPD Group .
Russ Krapnik (Russ Crupnick), vice president of the NPD Group, said that they considered every twelve tracks sold through online stores equivalent to one CD sold offline.
The increasing popularity of the iTunes Store is talking about changes in the music industry: CD sales are falling, and sales of digital music, on the contrary, are increasing. Also, an increase in music sales through iTunes can be explained by the popularity of iPods.

Nielsen SoundScan company data) with the current one (NPD Group), it turns out that sales of compact discs fell by 16%, while sales of digital music increased by 49% over the same period of time.
