Lenovo will replace the motherboard in computers with Intel's "problem" chipset for free

As many of you probably know, Intel recently revealed an error in the sixth series chipsets (code name Cougar Point). This problem has affected all manufacturers of desktop and mobile computers, including the company Lenovo. In this regard, we have today published an official statement (the text can be found here ), and we want to share the most complete information with Habr's users.

First of all, two most important points should be noted. Firstly, the identified problem in the chipset does not lead to data loss. Moreover, most users will not even notice any problems in working with a computer. Secondly, Lenovo IdeaPad models (laptops) and IdeaCentre (desktop PCs), presented at CES in January, were affected. Their sales in Russia are scheduled only for the spring of this year, and by that time the problem will be solved. In the meantime, Lenovo has suspended deliveries of all computers using this Intel chipset, and announced a program for free replacement of motherboards in those products that went on sale.

So, the problematic chipset is used in Lenovo laptops and desktops recently announced.
')
• IdeaPad Laptops: Y460P, Y560P, Z570, G470, G570, V370, V470, V570, B470, B570
• IdeaCentre desktop computers: K330, K330A, B520

I note that the K330 is a classic desktop PC, while the IdeaCentre B520 is a all-in-one PC, built on a notebook platform. According to Lenovo, the only thing that users of these models could theoretically encounter is a slowdown and interruptions in the operation of the optical drive. The main hard drive, as well as the data on it, are safe. Moreover, according to the company, malfunctions in affected motherboards can occur only in five percent of cases within three years of use. And this roughly corresponds to the usual reliability indicators for motherboards in the industry as a whole - with or without a problematic chipset.

What does Lenovo offer to users? In short, every buyer of a Lenovo laptop or desktop PC that has this problem will be able to replace the motherboard at a service center free of charge. Determine the presence of a defect in your model (let me remind you, the problem is not even present in all chipsets released to date, but only in those that were made after January 9, 2011) by the serial number of the laptop.

In general, despite the minimal effect a malfunction has on a computer, Lenovo takes the problem seriously. For Russia, I repeat, this problem most likely will not affect the end users. But the timing of the appearance of new models on sale may move: Lenovo expects delays in the release of some products by two to three months. Perhaps some new models will use other Intel chipsets that are not affected by this problem.

UPD. Timely and more detailed information about the problem can be obtained from the Lenovo website .
