Just six months ago, Amazon
announced that Kindle e-books are selling better than hardcover books. And yesterday, in the
latest quarterly earnings report , the company announced that e-books had overtaken and paperback books. This can be considered an important milestone in the publishing industry.
CEO Jeff Bezos said: “Last July, we announced that Kindle-books overtook hardcover books and predicted that Kindle would bypass soft-cover books in the second quarter of this year, so this milestone was reached even earlier than we expected. “And this is against the background of continued growth in softback books.”
In 2010, 115 Kindle-books were sold for every 100 paperback books and three times as many Kindle-books as hardcover books. These numbers do not take into account free Kindle-books, which makes them even more impressive. The rise in popularity of e-books, as well as good sales of the Kindle 3, helped Amazon to reach $ 10 billion per quarter for the first time in the company's history.
