Oriental manuscripts digitize

An unparalleled electronic catalog of ancient books and manuscripts from the library of the Eastern Faculty of St. Petersburg State University will be compiled in the northern capital.

Currently, an electronic description of several relict manuscripts of the ancient East has been scanned and compiled, said Milana Azarkina, head of the library of the Oriental faculty. She clarified that “computerization is being implemented within the framework of the national project“ Education ”at the expense of the grant of the program“ Innovative educational environment in a classical university ”.

Milana Azarkina told that a collection of about 300 thousand books is being upgraded, 50 thousand of them are unique manuscripts: Arabic manuscripts, Ottoman scrolls, texts in Japanese cursive and other forgotten languages. A third of copies are rare books published before 1900.

A unique scanner worth more than $ 20,000 was purchased to scan relic manuscripts and publications. At the same time, the complex is capable of digitally copying centuries-old manuscripts without damaging them, the interlocutor said. For example, according to her, the manuscript of the horoscope of the Persian Shah Tahmasp, compiled in Persia in 1526, can be estimated by experts of foreign insurance companies at $ 500,000.
