Igor Chekalin, an astronomer from Taganrog,
became the winner of the
Hidden Treasures space photography competition (“Hidden Treasures”) held by the International
European Southern Observatory (ESO). Competitors had to find interesting astronomical objects in
the observatory's archive , process them, remove distortions, turn pictures into color.
In total, more than 100 papers were sent to the competition. You can view the entire archive in

At the Hidden Treasures competition, Igor Chekalin won the first two places.

For the first place, he was awarded a trip to Chile to the ESO observation complex, where four reflecting telescopes operate with main mirrors of more than 8 m, connected by a computer network into a single VLT (Very Large Telescope). The prize for second place is the iPod Touch engraved with the ESO logo.
In third place was the work of the Ukrainian astrophotographer Sergey Stepanenko (he will receive a book and a DVD).
