
After almost two years of development
, the long-awaited Xfce 4.8 is
presented - a new stable version of a free desktop environment, replacing Xfce 4.6.
In Xfce 4.8, the outdated ThunarVFS and HAL frameworks are replaced by GIO, udev, ConsoleKit, and PolicyKit.
Users can now browse remote file systems using various protocols (SFTP, SMB, FTP, and many others). To reduce chaos, all file process dialog boxes are merged into one.
The panel was rewritten: it improved the management of position, transparency, panel elements and launch icons. Added new plug-in menu for viewing directories.

Improved settings dialogs. The screen customization dialog now supports RandR 1.2, detects screens automatically and allows users to choose their preferred resolution, refresh rate, position. Screens can be configured to either work in clone mode, or be placed side by side. Keyboard selection has become easier and more convenient for users. In addition, the manual configuration editor has become more functional.
