The largest sites will conduct a 24-hour IPv6 test
Facebook, Google, and Yahoo are sites that have over a billion daily visits — together with Akamai, Limelight Networks, and Internet Society have come together for the first global test of the IPv6 protocol.
On June 8, 2011, on World IPv6 Day, participants will include IPv6 in their core services for 24 hours.
IPv6 was developed in the late1990s, but was not implemented globally. While the IPv4 address space is limited to only 4.3 × 10 9 (4.3 billion) addresses, IPv6 supports approximately 3.4 × 10 38 (340 sextillion) unique addresses, which is considered sufficient for the foreseeable future.
