Facebook, Google, and Yahoo are sites that have over a billion daily visits β together with Akamai, Limelight Networks, and Internet Society have come
together for the first global test of the IPv6 protocol.
On June 8, 2011, on World IPv6 Day, participants will include IPv6 in their core services for 24 hours.
IPv6 was developed in the late
1990s, but was not implemented globally. While the IPv4 address space is limited to only 4.3 Γ 10
9 (4.3 billion) addresses, IPv6 supports approximately 3.4 Γ 10
38 (340 sextillion) unique addresses, which is considered sufficient for the foreseeable future.

Since the IPv4 address space is running out, the industry canβt afford to wait any longer. The companies came together to motivate organizations across the industry β providers, hardware manufacturers, operating system developers, and other web companies β to prepare their services for the transition.
