Public data corporation

The Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Minister of Commerce of Great Britain announced a plan to establish in 2011 a unique Public Data Corporation (Public Data Corporation), which will bring together information databases of all ministries and departments and will provide free and paid access to government information.

The benefit is twofold. On the one hand, the new item of income for the budget. On the other hand, commercial firms can create user-friendly web services for citizens (G2C) and for business (G2B) on government data and with government APIs.

What is even more interesting is that a public data corporation is planned to be created with private financing . That is, public data and government functions are partially transferred to corporations. Perhaps corporations will help build dozens of data centers needed in the future to store and distribute government data.

Secretary-General Francis Maud explains this idea: “A public data corporation is useful in three things. First and foremost, it allows you to make data freely available, so that payment for access to it will be sufficiently suitable for charging on an ongoing basis. It will be a center where developers, businesses and members of the public can access and use data in Internet applications, to make business decisions or to identify the most effective way to provide public services. Such work is already underway, but there is still a huge untapped potential. Secondly, it is a center of excellence where the best experience from the areas of data collection, management, storage and distribution can be applied. This will generate important operational synergies. Third, in this way we can attract private investment. ”
