True, the word “passport” appears only in the explanations of officials about this project, its working title is “Identity Ecosystem”, and the official “National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace”. Naturally, the public immediately remembered the notorious "Big Brother" from "1984". In that “ideal society”, the state interacted very well with the citizens, knowing everyone and everything about everyone thanks to the identification system. What is the official purpose of developing an online passport? Officials say the project aims to increase the security of its citizens on the web.
For example, Secretary of the US Department of Commerce Gary Locke speaks of "strengthening security on the Web, improving privacy and improving the authorization system on various resources, so that the user will not need to remember dozens and hundreds of passwords." Locke claims that, thanks to the Internet passport system, it is possible that the old authorization system through the password / login combination will be completely discarded.

But words are words, and the Identity Ecosystem system looks like an attempt to take the Internet and its users in the US segment under state control. You can imagine how this system is really designed, and replaced the login / password authorization system. Users log in almost instantly on many resources using their online ID. It feels good. But there are two interesting points: firstly, it will not be easy, but very simple to track the behavior of each particular enterprise, and secondly, you can easily “separate” the user from the Network in case of any misdeeds of this user (for example, actions that contradict principles of democracy, as it has become fashionable to say).
Interestingly, such large companies as Verizon Communications Inc., AT & T, Google Inc., PayPal, Symantec and some others expressed their approval of the project. It is clear why - after all, this project, subject to its approval, will require an infusion of large funds, on which private companies will be able to earn.
Interestingly, the initiative to develop Internet passports comes from the US President, Barack Obama. The project will be developed by the Department of Commerce. Currently, officials are trying with all their might to show that the system is being developed for the convenience of citizens, and not for the introduction of a system of total surveillance. Of course, it would be strange to see the official report of the US authorities like “tomorrow a system of global surveillance of all residents will be introduced.” Democracy, after all, what is there surveillance, right?
