The indefatigable Carsten Nol, who for many years has been investigating the cryptoresistance of GSM networks, presented a new way to intercept and decrypt a GSM signal at the Chaos Computer Club congress in Berlin, which does not require expensive equipment and a significant amount of time.
Now, to intercept a conversation or message, all you need is a laptop and a cheap phone that costs about $ 15 , which can be found on the market (for comparison, the previous methods required the availability of a pico cell or a set of Universal Software Radio Peripheral with additional expansion cards, whose cost approaches 2 2.5 thousand US dollars).
To decrypt a call or message, it is required to “intercept” the data from the broadcast using a phone with modified firmware and transfer it to a computer program that is distributed free of charge.
