China bans "illegal voice over internet protocol"

Soon Skype and other foreign VoIP-telephony services in China will be outlawed . The government announced that in the future only two state-owned operators will be able to transmit voice over the Internet: China Telecom and China Unicom. The decision is legal and how it will be implemented from a technical point of view - is not yet clear.

Such a decision is not due to economic and political reasons.

Voice transfer is a potentially very large market and it is unwise to give money to foreign companies. Skype offers Chinese residents to call the United States at 0.19 yuan per minute, while China Unicom charges the same call at 2.4 yuan per minute.

What is also important, the closed Skype protocols make it difficult to control subscribers, including wiretapping and disabling communication. Only in the biggest nightmare, the Chinese authorities can imagine, for example, how the wife of the Nobel laureate and dissident Liu Xiaobo will be giving an interview to Western media from his iPhone (just today Skype rolled out a new version of the mobile application for the iPhone with video calling).

However, right now outlawed Skype can still be used in China, traffic is not blocked and calls pass. Let's see how the situation will develop further. It is unlikely that a script tested on Google can be used here, that is, that China put pressure on the Skype company and it independently blocked Chinese traffic in the new version of its client software. Skype partner in China is Tom.com.

Most likely, legal measures will be applied to users of illegal VoIP-telephony as to fans of “adult content”, that is, long prison sentences.

For example, pornography is also banned in China, and the creator of the largest Chinese porn site since 2006 is serving a life sentence in prison, however, if desired, the Chinese can find the desired content on the Internet, despite the firewall. But who will risk freedom for dubious pleasure?
