WebDeskTop - Netvibes in Russian

The company “Sympho-group” has started the opening of testing its WebDeskTop personal page service , created for Russian-speaking users. This service has been developed for two years with an eye to similar foreign services, like Netvibes .

The developers of WebDeskTop in a press release said that their project in some moments exceeds analogs. So, it was said that WebDeskTop is the first service on the Internet that offers users file hosting with an unlimited amount, however, the file size should not exceed 300MB. In the near future, WebDeskTop promises to remove the mailbox restriction (now there is a limit of 3GB) and add a free IP-telephony service.


At the moment, in addition to the mailbox and file hosting, there are various tools like a password generator, or a clock calculator. This includes network utilities: Whois, DNS lookup, FTP and IRC (currently down), SSH and VNC (implemented using SSHTerm and SSHVnc, respectively).

There is a simple RSS reader (with thematic catalogs of rss feeds) and a weather widget. Yes, there is a toy "Minesweeper" :)

Another interesting feature of the service is the community. By joining the community, it will be possible to share files with its users, having previously set the appropriate access rights.

You can also note the built-in dating service - WebDeskTop participates in the partner program Mamba.

Some problems, as far as possible, have already been covered, but the main troubles are connected with the design. So, due to the inflexibility of the engine, the Abctop start page theme, calculated only on the main page, appears by mistake in the list of user themes. When choosing this theme, the whole page design breaks down. Also, at least it’s strange that despite the orientation towards the Russian user, some interface elements are written in English ... And some elements are translated with errors:

Nevertheless, some well-known companies have already shown interest in the project and its potential in corporate use (mainly because of the communities). In this regard, the project developers "plan to go in this direction and provide new opportunities for companies."

As a result, we have big plans for developers, with the implementation of which the service will in part really have no analogues. However, on the other hand, WebDeskTop is experiencing obvious problems with design and usability, which can scare away all users - developers have long had to understand that they “meet by their clothes, and escort the content by the mind ”.
