The Scientific and Technical Council of Roscosmos has
approved a project to create a global mobile communication system Cosmonet based on a group of 48
Gonets low-orbit satellites that will be able to transmit a signal between themselves. On this occasion, today in Moscow, a
press conference was held under the title “Cosmic Internet (Cosmonet) - an innovative breakthrough in the field of information technologies”.
If the domestic GLONASS was created as a replacement for the American GPS, the Cosmonet system is an alternative to the American
Iridium Next system. It is not clear what special “innovation breakthrough” is here, especially if we recall that similar foreign projects Iridium and GlobalStar went bankrupt almost immediately after the start of commercial activity.
The state-owned satellite company Gonets is going to launch all satellites into orbit by 2016. To do this, it needs at least 20 billion rubles. government funding. Probably, this is the lowest estimate, because the Iridium project cost several times more ($ 5.5 billion in 1997-1999 prices).
It must be said that in the truncated version of “messenger” it works now. The system was created in the 1980s, so that the intelligence officers could transmit the collected data to their home countries using mobile devices. The first versions of the Gonets satellites looked like this.

“We are currently engaged in active negotiations with Iridium - they are consulting with us on a number of issues of creating Iridium Next. That is, we have the know-how demanded, including suppliers of advanced solutions. “Cosmonet” is just an opportunity to realize our scientific and technical potential, ”says GLONASS General Designer Yury Urlichich.
