Russian spelling on "Macs": a ray of light in a dark kingdom
A couple of days ago, links to the Orfo Spellchecker for Mac OS X flew on Twitter. A few words about the impressions.
Everyone knows that on poppies with checking Russian spelling things are, to put it mildly, not very good. Until recently, Russian spell checkers for this platform could be counted literally on the fingers of one hand (and still remained free): this is a regular Makovsky spell checker and cocoAspell .
A truly sane system from this couple can only be recognized as cocoAspell, since the staff spell checker has a very small dictionary with an incredible, no, an incredible amount of errors.

cocoAspell, however, cannot be called the perfect spell checker: it often misses unfamiliar words, and most importantly, it works very slowly, especially with large texts.
This week a new Russian spell checker appeared - Orfo-2010 Lite from Informatic (see links below). Interestingly, this is the same spell checker that was once a part of all editions of MS Office - and it’s not surprising that I wanted to get to know him more thoroughly.
Alas, but the way to get "Orfo" was long and thorny, yetBeta Lite.
How is the mechanism for obtaining a demo version of any program? No way: usually we just download it from the site, install it - and work with it for a period.
With Orfo, everything is much more complicated: to get a demo version, you need not only to download the file from the Informatics website, but also to order an individual demo key by email, without which the demo version will not work. In the end, I managed to wade through all the obstacles, but the sediment remained - as well as the confusion about why it was necessary to make this whole garden.
However, inconvenient installation can be forgiven if the program is really good. Is “Orfo” good?
In short, the presence of "Orfo" almost did not notice. No, in a good way: the spell checker works quickly, correctly indicates errors, knows the new words “iphone” and “ipad” and behaves extremely decently. On top of everything else, Orfo is able to check Russian grammar (commas, etc.), which is generally new to MacOS.
The only censure that appeared after several days of working with Orfo was too reduced functionality compared to the PC version. For example, “Orfo” for “Macs” does not know how to check multilingual texts (both in Russian and in English) - I personally seriously miss this.
There are also minor roughnesses - so, “Orfo” from time to time gives the remark “A colloquial expression that gives the text an unconstrained character. If you allow colloquial expressions in your text, then disable this option. ” The salt of the joke is that this option is simply nowhere to turn off.
I hope that “Informatic” will eventually be able to eliminate these jambs (as well as parsley with “demonstration” keys) and release a normal, uncut version.
The program has a certain potential - Orfo, even in its raw form, is suitable for use not only for documents, but also for mail in Mail.
