American providers report ( PDF ) that for the first time in recent years the volume of traffic using the HTTP protocol exceeded the amount of traffic using the P2P protocols. This “small revolution” was largely due to the Youtube site, which now generates 10% of all traffic on the Internet. The metric covers US users connected via broadband channels.
HTTP now transfers 46% of all Internet traffic, and in peer-to-peer networks - 37%. Then with a large margin: mail (9%), non-HTTP video streams (3%), games (2%) and VoIP (1%).
Among the HTTP traffic, the largest proportion of web pages (45%), streaming video (36%) and streaming audio (5%). The Youtube site generates about a fifth of HTTP traffic and continues to increase its share. ')
