Stand-along community vs communities within social networks

I thought here, looking at, say, Kombi : why do we need to create a social network, then to form communities there?

After all, the question immediately arises - where the money? Adsense-like? For the Russian-speaking audience - it is doubtful. Of course, a runner can talk about $ 1.5, but this is a penny, and even these numbers confuse me ...

The only viable approach, IMHO, is to form a homogeneous community on a separate site based on the relationship to a certain subject area, and introducing an existing (or creating, which is also an option) niche brand.

In this case, such an approach is, firstly, cheaper, and secondly, content is controlled better than in social networks (why is a separate huge topic). Thirdly, there is such an effect - if the site is “only about it”, then it causes more interest among fans of “this” than the site, which “is about that too”. In general - time, of course, will show, but logic is a great thing. :))
