Java 7 for Mac OS X: The Future Behind OpenJDK

Oracle and Apple have just released the following press release:

Redwood Shores, Cupertino, CA, November 12, 2010

Today, Oracle and Apple have announced the opening of a project to develop OpenJDK for Mac OS X. Apple will create most of the key components, tools and technologies that are needed to implement Java SE 7 on Mac OS X, including 32-bit and 64-bit virtual mashina HotSpot-based, class library, network stack and foundation for a new graphical client. OpenJDK will be available to free software developers, so that they can access and participate in the project.

“We are pleased to welcome Apple as an important participant in the evolving OpenJDK community,” said Hasan Rizvi, vice president of development for Oracle. “Java availability on Mac OS X plays a key role in cross-platform support for the Java platform. The Java developer community can breathe easy, being sure that the latest Java environment will continue to be available for Mac OS X in the future. If we recall the announcement a month ago that IBM also connected to OpenJDK, now the project has been picked up by the three largest software companies . "

“We love working with Oracle, and reinsuring that Mac will always have great Java,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s vice president of software development. “If our users want to keep the latest and safest version of Java available, then the best way to do this is to take it directly from Oracle.”

Apple also confirmed that they will continue to provide Java SE 6 for both Snow Leopard and the upcoming release of Mac OS X Lion. Java SE 7 and future versions of Java for Mac OS X will be provided by Oracle itself.

This is written on the Oracle blog (link to which came along with the official newsletter). Eric (Henrik Stahl), who is a strategist at the Java Platform Group and an Oracle PR manager on Java, says something like this:

“This announcement was the result of a long-running dialogue between Oracle and Apple. I understand that the uncertainty (which happened right after Apple spread the information about Java’s “obsolescence”) is scary, but by the very nature of things we couldn’t and didn’t want to agree. I'm afraid that this is the case, and nothing can be done about it.

In the interests of all Java developers, I am very pleased that the future release of Java for OpenJDK is finally confirmed. I'm sure you have tons of questions, so let's start with a couple.

Q: when will JDK 7 for OSX appear?
A: I suppose, first there will be a release supported by those platforms that already have support, and OSX support will appear later. JDK 7 schedule can not be so easy to adjust for major changes like adding a new platform.

Q: How much later? What about updates, will they appear simultaneously with updates on other platforms?
A: Too early to say sorry.

Q: I like Java and OSX! How can I be a part of this whole thing?
A: Join as a contributor. Or try to go to work in Oracle, we are looking for new people!

More information will appear in a couple of weeks and months. In the meantime, successfully pokodit! "
