In the wake of Vision 2010

A lot of interesting announcements were made at the recent Symantec Vision conference in Barcelona. Writing about all for a very long time, so briefly about what is most interesting for us in Russia. Read and watch the photo report from the event under the cut.

1. The new Symantec logo "entered into force". About rebranding was written in detail in one of the previous posts

2. Significant additions to the portfolio of mobile products . The most important thing is support for new platforms, namely Android and Apple iOS (which the iPhone and iPad use) in addition to the support previously provided for Windows Mobile, Symbian and BlackBerry. New mobile device management features include remote wipe, device inventory, and enforcing password policies. Coupled with VeriSign and PGP technologies acquired this year, Symantec product portfolio for protecting and managing mobile devices for enterprises:

• Device Management: Symantec Mobile Management
• Device Security: Symantec Endpoint Protection Mobile Edition , Symantec Network Access Control Mobile Edition
• Data Encryption: PGP Mobile , PGP Support Package for BlackBerry
• Strong authentication: VeriSign Identity Protection (VIP) Access for Mobile , VeriSign Device Certificate Services

Separately, there are still solutions for individual users (Norton) and security-solutions for mobile operators. We will certainly tell about the latter in more detail, but a little later.

3. New protection technology based on reputation . This truly revolutionary technology determines the security level of each file, based on information about its context - where it came from, how long it was created, what are the characteristics of its distribution paths to other Symantec users, etc. Anonymous information is collected from more than 100,000,000 (one hundred million) computers.
Since virus writers can easily modify the contents of a malicious code file in order to circumvent signature-based protection, it becomes difficult to control such a wave of malware using only traditional means of protection. It is the only technology in the industry that uses a similar approach to defining such threats. In addition, it also includes signature-based protection, an intrusion prevention system, heuristics, and application behavior analysis.

Main advantages:
• Protection against narrowly distributed, evolving threats that cannot be detected using other approaches.
• Improved performance (reduces the system load when scanning by almost 90%, scanning only those files that were identified as risky)
• Reducing the number of false positives (the system contains not only software blacklists, but also white lists)
The prototype of this technology (which was originally announced under the working title Ubiquity) was the technology known as Quorum - it is used in protective products for home users. It is worth noting that immediately after Vision 2010, these technologies were awarded the Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Award.
