Groupon rejected Google offer

On Habré, there was already some news with information that Google had acquired several billion dollars (rumors were about 2.5 to 6 billion), Groupon collective shopping service. Most of those who followed the transaction were confident that it was already completed, and Groupon joined the rest of the services of the corporation. But not everything is so simple - according to the Chicago Tribune periodical, Groupon decided to reject the proposal of the search giant, and continue to remain independent.

It should be noted that the real cost of the service of collective purchases is 1.5-2 billion dollars, but not 5-6. The corporation offered such a large amount because Groupon’s management did not agree to less. But, as we see, even a larger amount was not enough - the desire for independence turned out to be too strong. In principle, maybe this is the right decision - I remember that Twitter was wanted to buy for the sum of about half a billion dollars. Then the microblogging service management refused to sell the startup, and made the right decision - now the cost of Twitter is several billion US dollars.

It may well be that with Groupon the same story will happen - the idea of ​​the service is interesting, the user base continues to expand, and the growth trends are quite large. Now the number of Groupon users has about 12 million people, attracted by the opportunity to buy a good thing at a low price, in the case of attracting "colleagues" in the purchase.

The failure of Groupon can quite strongly influence the further development of the corporation itself - it is known that Google considers Groupon to be one of the most desirable companies, which, according to the plan, should join the overall infrastructure of the search giant's services.

By the way, Google is not the first company to which Groupon refuses - at the beginning of this year, Yahoo wanted to buy the service, offering about two billion dollars for a startup. The management of the latter refused the deal, and, as we see, a large amount also could not affect the desire to continue to remain independent. Well, one can only respect such a decision and hope that it really was the right one.
