ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries in e-books

We are all accustomed to electronic dictionaries in home computers, laptops, PDAs and phones. Somewhere they appeared a few decades ago, somewhere for several years. Don't you think that something is missing in this list? Agree, in a strange way, reading an e-book, crawling over a paper dictionary and looking for a translation of an unfamiliar word - mobility disappears, and with it the whole point of the e-reader. But many people today strive to receive information in any languages: they are willing to get acquainted with other cultures, are interested in technical innovations and originals of literary masterpieces from different countries.

Having decided that something needs to be done with this, ABBYY and PocketBook companies have joined forces to produce e-books with ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries. At the first stage of this cooperation, PocketBook 360 ABBYY Lingvo was released for the Russian and Ukrainian markets. The generation of PocketBook devices, which included the model 360, worked on Linux, and we adapted our linguistic technologies for this platform. During the first half of 2010, about 4 thousand readers were sold with our dictionaries. This experience and to us, and the PocketBook company seemed successful, so we decided not to stop there :)

Since December 2010, the entire new PocketBook model range is equipped with ABBYY Lingvo x3 Worldwide. The updated line of "readers" will consist of the classic models of PocketBook Pro 602 and Pro 902, premium models of PocketBook Pro 603 and Pro 903 and PocketBook IQ with a color TFT screen. The IQ model (and, as expected, all subsequent ones) will be based on Android, and now we are porting our linguistic technologies to this platform.

Very big changes have affected the composition of dictionaries. If earlier in the “reading rooms” there were dictionaries of English, German and Ukrainian directions, now, since PocketBook plans to actively enter the international market, these will be dictionaries for as many as 24 languages, and there will be 44 dictionaries in total (mostly dictionaries for translation from English into European languages, including, of course, Russian, and in addition, Ukrainian-Russian and Danish-French dictionaries). If the user is not enough (dictionaries contain from 20 to 250 thousand words each - as a rule, this is enough to read almost any books), he can buy an extended package consisting of 40 premium dictionaries for 9 languages, which will be sold in the near future at www.PocketBook-int.com and www.BookLand.net .

For Lingvo, the pre-installation in PocketBook is the first major international project and the first experience of integrating into an e-book - and we expect it to be successful. In the future, we plan to continue cooperation with PocketBook - to expand the functionality of dictionaries, add services and generally do everything that the market requests and allows the device!
