Apache will breathe new life into Google Wave

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has decided to continue developing the Google Wave concept as free software. The project description is contained in the Apache Incubator offer . Source codes will be moved from Google Code to ASF servers. The community around waveprotocol.org will also be transferred to an Apache incubator.

The creators of Wave had an ambitious goal - to revolutionize the methods and methods of online communication, to unite all methods of communication, including e-mail, chat, blogs and document sharing. But Google did not manage to realize the true potential of this platform and interest the popular masses. The initial enthusiasm of users was replaced by apathy, and as a result, it was decided to abandon the development of this product.

But this does not mean the death of technology. Wave Google Wave can be exported to ZIP archives and imported into alternative environments such as WIAB (Wave in a Box). The Apache Software Foundation wants to continue developing WIAB as an ASF project.

In the project description it says what specific functionality is planned to be made in the client and server parts.

Apparently, the Apache organization decided to take on this project when it became apparent that some large companies were interested in the technology. The published proposal says that support for the Apache Wave project is expected from companies "Novell, SAP, a company related to the use of Wave in the US Air Force, start-ups in the Wave-ecosystem and many independent individuals." These people and organizations seem to be key Wave developers.

If Apache can really revive the project and rally a wide community of developers around it, then who knows, maybe the “waves” will still be able to accomplish what they are thinking about - a revolution in online communications.
