Intel is working on a 1000-core processor

The management of Intel Corporation stated that a processor is being developed in the laboratories of this company, which contains about 1000 discrete cores. As you know, now most of the processor models include a much smaller number of cores, from two to six. On Habré, the message that the experimental 48-core processor for serious scientific developments had been presented slipped. And just on the basis of this chip, a new, 1000-core processor is being created.

That will be released a new type of processor, said one of the employees of the corporation, a scientific specialist Timothy Mattson. The Mattson report was heard at the Supercomputing Conference 2010. According to the speaker, the 48-core processor is a very successful design that allows you to scale up to 1000 cores - a cloud architecture, so to speak, in miniature. Even after the number of cores reaches thousands, the size of the processor begins to negatively affect the efficiency of the processor.

However, until now, Intel engineers have not been able to create a working processor with so many cores - so far there are only purely theoretical circuits that are created according to the Intel Terascale Research Program project. But there is a 48-core processor, and the engineers themselves call it a "processor-data-center." The frequency of the new chip is 1.66-1.83 GHz, and if you activate all the processor cores, the processor performance increases significantly. The technology used in the development of this processor allows you to disable and enable individual processor cores.

Functions of a similar nature, according to the leadership of Intel, will be applicable in other versions of processors, and such processors will appear very soon. Experts say that adding new cores improves performance, and power consumption increases insignificantly. Among other things, multi-core chips do not require a significant increase in the clock frequency of operation, which means that such a processor heats up less than a processor with a large clock frequency of operation.

It remains to wait for the emergence of a really working 1000-core processor, which can really change a lot.
