Base GeoIP - countries and cities

When developing one project, a task arose - to determine, by the IP-address of the visitor, his country and city, in Russian. The search for a turnkey solution was unsuccessful - Russian-speaking bases of countries can be found (for example, wipmania.com ), but there are no databases of cities. Help came from abroad, in the face of the English maxmind.com . The database was brought back to normal (MySQL) and partially translated into Russian using several reference books (~ 6,000 names, taking into account the namesake cities ~ 15.500). The result of this work is available for free download.

The database is available in two versions: " Countries and cities " (17Mb, after installing ~ 85Mb) and " Only countries " (2Mb, after installing ~ 11Mb). Also in the archives is a small example of using the database in php.

The accuracy of determining the country ~ 99%, the accuracy of determining the cities of Russia ~ 90%. Whether it is a lot or a little depends on the tasks that you are going to solve with the help of this base.

To install the database, I recommend using programs like mysqldumper or via ssh to execute
mysql –p –u _ < .sql

I do not recommend installing a database of cities on a shared hosting, it will not sustain the load.

I plan to do periodic updates and additions. ~ 180 thousand names remained untranslated, if someone shares good geographic English-Russian or Russian-English dictionaries - I will accept with gratitude.
