Akamai data rate statistics for the 50 largest countries

The largest CDN-provider Akamai has provided statistics on the actual speed of data transfer from its servers to users in 50 countries around the world. Also named the average temperature in the hospital Internet speed in the world: 1.8 Mbit / s.

This information is somewhat different statistics SpeedTest.net . Although SpeedTest has a full list of countries, Akamai’s numbers are more credible, because they measure the speed of transmission of real traffic from popular websites (Apple, Microsoft, Adobe and others that use CDN), and not the speed of transmission of test files from special test servers.

For example, in the SpeedTest statistics, Ukraine is very much ahead of Russia in data transfer speed, and in the top four world leaders are Lithuania, Latvia and Moldova.

In Akamai statistics, Russia is already ahead of Ukraine (countries occupy 27 and 28 places in the ranking, respectively). Lithuania, Moldova and others are completely absent in order not to create noise in the table.

The graph in brackets after each country shows its place in the world by the number of Internet users ( Internet World Stats statistics). Only 50 countries with the maximum number of Internet users are included in the rating: from China from 420 million users to Denmark from 4.75 million. In total, 50 billion people use the Internet in these 50 countries, that is, more than 90% of the global Internet audience.

The average data transfer rate for the 50 largest countries (by the number of Internet users)

Akamai statistics for the II quarter. 2010

According to this table, we can conclude that South Korea (17 Mbit / s) is still out of competition. China (0.86 Mbit / s) is the leader in terms of the number of users, lags behind the rating, while Hong Kong’s Chinese region (in many ratings it is considered separate from China), with 8.6 Mbit / s, is the second largest in the world.

Another interesting fact is that in the Akamai ranking, Canada has overtaken the neighboring US (the Americans should be offended).

The average Internet speed for all countries of the world is 1.8 Mbit / s. It does not take into account the 50 largest countries, and all users.

Here it is interesting that more than half of the global audience is already sitting on channels 2+ Mbit / s, and in 22% the real speed exceeds 5 Mbit / s.

In the end - the most informative of all the tables: the distribution of users by data transfer speed. Peculiar rating of "digital inequality" for each individual country. Economists sometimes use a special measure of the difference in income for the richest 10% and 10% of the poorest people in the country. This indicator symbolizes a kind of social justice in society. If we apply this rating to the speed of the Internet, then the table shows that the same Chile and Spain are much more “fairer" than the neighboring Russia and Ukraine.

Of course, all these numbers have little to do with the subjective “Internet speed” for each individual user. Here the key aspect is latency. Even the thickest channels will not help compensate for the delay of 600-1000 ms for each request.

It is clear that for the majority of Russians the sites on Russian hosting will be loaded much faster than the same sites for Koreans, although the Koreans have channels that seem to be six times wider.
