Installing Updates in Virtual Machine Templates

An important point that you need to pay attention to when planning the infrastructure of virtual machines (especially in VDI scenarios) is the need to keep the virtual machine templates up to date in terms of installed operating system updates and anti-virus databases.

One solution to this problem for the Hyper-V platform is the recently updated Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 3.0 (available for download here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=8408ecf5-7afe-47ec-a697-eb433027df73 ) .

The utility requires the Hyper-V platform to be managed by Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 or 2008 R2. Updates can be installed as with
Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP1, 3.0 SP2, and with System Center Configuration Manager 2007, 2007 SP1, 2007 SP2, 2007 R2.

• virtual machine patterns
• shut down and stopped virtual machines directly on Hyper-V hosts
• virtual machines and separate virtual disks stored by the SCVMM library
