[Translation] JVM division into paid / free version: hysteria, which began with a tweet

In continuation of the topic, Oracle intends to divide the JVM into a paid / free version.

pelegri, the editor of the famous blog about Java and his ilk - The Aquarium , unsubscribed about the hysteria that began after the statement by the representative of Oracle regarding the Premium version of JVM.

This is the story of one tweet ...

Last week, Adam presented a report on The Road Ahead for Java on the further development of Java SE at QCon in San Francisco. In the PR part of the report was:

Oracle JDK and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) will be available for free download; no changes to the licensing scheme are envisaged

Paid services: JRockit Mission Control, JRockit Real Time, Java for Business and Enterprise Support will continue to be provided for a fee.

I don’t even know what specific words Adam used, but Michael Nygard tweet the following:

“Our intention is to provide a Premium version of the JDK” - this was said on the topic of the open-source JDK. #qconsf

Nothing, just tweet. Maybe Adam said so. The problem is not this, but in what happened later.

This tweet was retouched so many times that at some point they lost a part about open source, leaving a part about a paid version, and some other ad-libs were not added. All this fell into the hands of journalists, who spread the "news" on news sites, blogs and twitter. In general, everything happened very quickly: Michael posted a tweet on Saturday the 6th, and yesterday, after five minutes on Google News, I discovered the following sensational stories:

November 6, Oracle cooks up free and premium JVMs
November 7th, Oracle vuole monetizzare Java ... Sai che novitĂ !
November 8, Daily Dose - Oracle to Sell "Premium" JVM
November 8, Oracle: Novos Planos para Java Virtual Machine
November 9, Oracle will release paid and free versions of Java
November 10, Oracle To Offer Free and Paid 'Premium' Versions of JVM

Plus topics on the forums DZone, SlashDot, The Server Side. Plus mailing lists.

All this “grew up” from one tweet, “verified” by “journalists”.

Some of ours spent a lot of time on the weekends to deliver the right information to the people. Henrik yesterday (apparently, Henrik Stahl) published a post about Oracle’s intentions regarding JVM, Dalibor used it to write his post Extra! Extra! Oracle Premium JVM! Read all about it! . But it is much easier to spread misinformation than to correct it. Take a look at the news list above and tell me how many correct news are there.

Morality? For me there are two:

1) Journalists (bloggers, tweeters) should always remember the words of Graeme Philipson (@robilad):
“Journalists must be careful in the current online age of constant disinformation”

2) Readers should read the news with skepticism.

Of course, it sounds like mother's instructions, but it is never too much to remind again.

Before we return to thematic topics, I will recall a similar hysteria regarding InnoDB and MySQL. Comments are unnecessary - read Get The Facts: MySQL Licensing and Pricing .

Ps. I don't blame Michael for anything, with his tweet everything was ok.
