My experience of opening a free hosting
Two and a half years ago I opened free hosting.
Due to the excellent conditions and a small PR, at the peak of its existence, the hosting had 3500 active users ! All of them were kept on one optimized dedicated server.
Usually, free hosting is created using the following business models:
- Earnings on advertising and paid additional services (example: ucoz.ru).
- Attracting customers to your own paid hosting (example: jino-net.ru)
My hosting was created for a different model: I then had a project that had to be promoted (I will write about the project another time). Here, using the opening of free hosting, I tried to do it.

On a free hosting any rubbish stretches like flies on shit.
- Phishers (problem number 1)
- Sites on curves (non-optimized) engines
- There were a lot of vareznikov and CAP (systems where they pay a penny for viewing ads).
The concentration of shkolota exceed the norm by 10 times.
The number of idiotic support questions is amazing.
Although, all these problems are familiar to the owners of paid hosting, on a free hosting any rubbish is much more.
At the peak of popularity, the total attendance of hosted sites was only about 6000 unique visitors per day (statistics were collected by an invisible single-pixel counter from LiveInternet)!
The server cost was $ 180 per month, therefore, 1000 unique views of my project advertising cost me a lot - about $ 1!
Why expensive? Because the CTR was the same as the TBN banners. And considering how low the return is in banner networks , the unprofitability of the venture cannot be in doubt - 100 times more expensive than TBN + hemorrhoids with server support.
I remember, in desperation, I did a mailing list for users, they say, throw off as much as you can. In general, they dropped about $ 70 :)
Then the hosting was smoothly closed (the mailing was previously made, about a month before closing).
Those who donated, left for a year for free.
Also gave the opportunity to go to a paid hosting with the preservation of the domain.
The possibility of this, few took advantage.
Some users are still sitting on my server for a penny, but the hosting itself no longer exists.
