Web developers have a serious problem, causing a lot of problems and a headache - the distribution of browser versions. In order to use the latest layouts, the developer is obliged to monitor how each popular browser supports these functions, as well as whether Internet users use the latest browser versions. If not, the developer has to stay within the specifications of an outdated, but popular browser.
Taking this into account, we decided to conduct a study in which we find out what percentage of people use the latest versions of MS Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera.
Current situation
Before showing the statistics, we want to say that we are investigating the situation at the
moment . Shares will change over time, as manufacturers release new versions of browsers, and users migrate from version to version. We will use data from the
StatCounter statistics agency, which has its registration sensors on 3 million sites.
According to current data, the latest (major) versions of browsers are MS IE 8, Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome 7, Safari 5, Opera 10.6
Eventually:
91% of Google Chrome users work under version 7.0.
81% of Mozilla Firefox users run under version 3.6.
77% of Opera users work under version 10.6.
71% of Safari users work under version 5.0.
60% of Internet Explorer users work under version 8.0.
The average share of users working under the latest major version of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera is
71% .
No wonder Google Chrome “wins” in this contest. By default, Google Update goes along with Google Chrome, which downloads updates unnoticed by the user in the background. Only a small, constantly decreasing, the proportion of users continues to work with version 6.

Browser Updates
Together with all browsers, one way or another, there is a certain component of automatic updates, but only with Google Chrome it works on its own, without asking for any permission from the owner of the computer. Yes, this policy simplifies the life of web developers, who may not think about how their site will work on older versions of the browser, but users of other browsers will have to convince and train to switch to a newer version.
Conclusion
Honestly, the situation turned out to be much better than expected. More than two thirds of Internet users work with the latest versions of their browsers, which naturally should make web developers happy (
But it should be saddened that Internet Explorer 8 is leading with clumsy support for web standards. Although IE 6/7 is better than anything - Approx. Translator ) because they can use the latest web standards.
Internet Explorer stands out from the whole cluster of grace. About 40% of its users still work with an outdated version of the web browser. Hopefully, Microsoft will succeed in marketing and updates to convince users to switch to fresh Internet Explorer 9.
