Nicaraguan military wandered into the territory of another country because of Google

more precisely, not because of Google itself, but because of Google Maps, which was developed by the corporation. Thus, a relatively large division of the army of Nicaragua climbed into the territory of Costa Rica, founded the camp and had a pleasant time, not even suspecting that this was a foreign territory. After it turned out that the unit was moving along the route compiled using the Google Maps service.

In general, no one knows if this is true or not, but the commander of the Nicaraguan army unit claims to use the Google Maps service when drawing up a route map. It turned out that this unit climbed on the island of Calero, which is located just in the middle of the San Juan River. This island actually belongs to Costa Rica, but the Google Maps showed that it is part of Nicaraguan territory.

The military and decided that it is possible to conduct a raid on this island, training in overcoming water obstacles. They not only climbed onto the island, but also cut down several trees in the forest, which, as it turned out, grew in a protected forest. In general, the training was a success, and only at the very end of their raid, the military realized that this territory was part of Costa Rican territory.

The developers of Google Maps have already reported that they recognize the error, but do not understand how it could have occurred. Probably, according to Google, outdated data was used to create maps of both countries. The island really belongs to Costa Rica now, and the governments of both countries recognize this - there is no conflict here.

In the Western press, a wave of hostile notes about a similar situation immediately arose. Journalists also claim that a similar service from Microsoft shows the correct data, indicating that the island is Costa Rican. Both countries do not particularly bother about what happened, but the president of Costa Rica (by the way, a woman), condemned the actions of the military.

In general, dear habravchane, be careful, and then you accidentally wander to where you should not, using cartographic services =)
