Trend Micro raises scandal over MS Security Essentials through Windows Update

When I first found out that Microsoft started offering Windows users, who did not install antivirus software, the Microsoft Security Essentials protection complex, I began to wonder how long other vendors would hold out until they started screaming “Unfair! Clean up immediately! ” Ed Bott pondered the same thing.

Today, Computerworld announced that Trend Micro, an anti-virus software maker, was very unhappy with the situation. A company spokesman said in an interview that this update, provided through the Windows Update mechanism, affects the interests of the company, since it imposes a solution from Microsoft without providing an alternative. The representative added that this should not be.
Still, a Trend Micro spokesman is cunning. Users are given a choice when installing even critical updates, while MSE is marked as optional and the installation checkbox is unchecked by default. In addition, the update mechanism examines the system for the presence of anti-virus software and, if it is, the update does not appear at all in the list.
However, if Trend Micro gets to court, then the Microsoft rationale for the judges may seem insufficient. Jeff Smith of Microsoft stands firm in his company's position. He declared:
By offering Security Essentials as an optional upgrade for unprotected PCs, we make it easier for users who need protection but cannot find the time and opportunity to search for the right antivirus software.

He also added that this is just another way to provide users with a useful program.
Yes, Microsoft does not climb anyone in the liver with its MSE through Windows Update. If you don’t click the Windows Update Center on the microscopic tab of recommended updates, you won’t see it. But will the court be satisfied with the unobtrusiveness of the update? Who is right: Microsoft or Trend Micro?
