Scientists recreated ancient Rome, 320 AD - all in 3D

According to the Daily Mail , experts from around the world presented the Rome Reborn project, which they called the largest and most comprehensive modeling of a historic city that digitally recreates Rome.

Project leader Bernard Frischer from the University of Virginia said that the simulation reflects Rome in 320 AD under the rule of Emperor Constantine. As part of Rome Reborn, about 7,000 buildings were restored.

Thanks to the laser scanning of modern Rome and the recommendations of archaeologists, a group of scientists restored most of the city with a length of 21 km, using programs of modern three-dimensional modeling. There were also restored the interiors of about 30 of the most famous buildings, including the Senate, the Colosseum, as well as the famous basilica erected by Emperor Maxentius. In all these buildings restored all the murals and decorations.

With the help of the recommendations of archaeologists managed to recreate the likely form of completely destroyed statues, monuments and buildings. Thus, the temple of Venus was restored, as well as a fountain near the Colosseum.

Frischer said that the Rome Reborn project was created by a group of archaeologists, architects and computer specialists from the University of Virginia and California, as well as from German, French and British institutions more than 10 years ago. $ 2 million was spent on the project.

Bernard believes that Rome Reborn will be useful both to scholars and students for scientific purposes, and to tourists visiting Rome.

Now on the project site, only video clips and screenshots of the recreated city are available - this is done in order to ensure that the site is working with a large influx of users. Now the authors of the Rome Reborn project are negotiating with Linden Lab to make a three-dimensional model of Rome available in Second Life.
