Twelve major US universities have launched a new program, which is being implemented in conjunction with Google . Its goal is to digitize the contents of libraries — about 10 million book volumes — so that students, teachers, and anyone interested can get quick access to educational and other materials.
Materials, according to representatives of Google, will be scanned and indexed "in full compliance with copyright laws." The current participants in the project (these are universities in Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, and several others) are planning to join Harvard and the University of California.
