Intel bought Infineon unit for mobile phone platforms

Early rumors were confirmed: Intel announced the purchase of Infineon Wireless Solutions (WLS) division of Infineon Technologies AG. The amount of the transaction amounted to 1.4 billion dollars.



Infineon WLS is a leading provider of portable solutions and platforms for mobile phones and smartphones. The division produces signal processors, radio communications and power management chips, single-chip systems and related system software. These solutions allow you to combine the network of operators with subscriber devices and to transfer voice and data to end users.

According to the press release, the objectives of Intel in the transaction are to expand the range of portable and embedded solutions; entering new markets and strengthening them in current market segments, including smartphones, tablets, netbooks, laptops and embedded devices, and expanding the customer base. The deal will help Intel combine the best-in-class WLS solutions with its own application processors and Wi-Fi and WiMAX adapters and release products with more connectivity, including support for 2G and 3G, and subsequently LTE.
