Troyan caused a plane crash

On August 20, 2008 Spanair flight 5022 departed from Madrid, but the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 plane crashed near the airport. 154 people died. A commission was immediately set up to investigate the causes of the catastrophe, which has now published a preliminary report .

Reportedly , the cause of the accident was a virus that hit the airline's computer system. Because of this, the system could not identify the three technical problems of the aircraft, which, if detected, could have prevented the departure.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the aircraft had flaps and slats removed - and the pilots did not receive an audible message about this because they were unable to activate the warning system during takeoff.
The computer was infected with a kind of trojan that could be placed there in various ways: via a USB flash drive (like on the International Space Station in 2008) or via a remote VPN connection. According to experts from Cyber Defense Agency, incidents like this are likely to be repeated in the future.

The court ruled Spanair to provide all computer logs from its networks before and after the accident. The final expert report will be published no earlier than December.
