OpenStreetMap and Fire Maps of Russia: Draft of the Week

In Russia, the catastrophic situation with fires. The Ministry of Emergency Situations does what it can, volunteers also coordinate their efforts to extinguish fires and mutual assistance. The OpenStreetMap community also didn’t stand aside, and together with ScanEx company they launched an unprecedented project: mapping fire sites from real-time imagery from space.

The project data (from the moment OSM started drawing a little more than a day) is already being analyzed by specialists, and any habrauser can look at them by visiting the special website: http://fires.kosmosnimki.ru .

Especially for those who are not yet familiar with editing OpenStreetMap, we wrote quite detailed instructions . In short: choose the picture you like (and, unlike Yandex or Google, there can be several for one location), open it in the editor, align it, outline the fires. In the OSM database, the data will appear as soon as you upload them to the server, and after a while the fire monitoring layer synchronizes with them.

We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
