Today
marks the birthday of not only
Internet Explorer . Two years before that, in 1993, Jan Murdoch announced the start of developing the “the Debian Linux Release” system. The name “Debian” is composed of the names of Murdoch (
Ian ) and his girlfriend (now ex-wife) Debra (
Deb ra).
Debian is now one of the most popular Linux distributions, with a significant impact on the development of other distributions. Debian has the largest package repository and number of supported architectures among all distributions. Debian has become the basis for more than a hundred distros, the most famous of which are Adamantix, Bioknoppix, Dreamlinux, Clusterix, Gnoppix, Knoppix, Ubuntu, Libranet, Linspire, MEPIS and Xandros Desktop OS.
Today the project turns 17 years old.
